Department of Justice Drops Case Against Counselor

by Karla Dial

The U.S. Department of Justice today quietly dropped a lawsuit it’s been waging against a Florida sidewalk counselor, and agreed to pay her $120,000.

The Obama administration has been dragging the case out for 18 months, waiting until the last possible day to drop the case against Mary “Susan” Pine. She had been accused of obstructing the entrance to an abortion clinic while passing out pro-life literature and counseling women in late 2009. Government attorneys also waited until the last day to file an appeal after a federal judge dismissed the case for lack of evidence in January of this year.

In that decision, Judge Kenneth L. Ryskamp questioned whether the DOJ collaborated with the clinic on the prosecution, and said he’d have sanctioned the government if possible. |

| “I can not bring this communication to a close without invoking you to join me in humble and devout thanks to the great Ruler of Nations for the multiplied blessings which He has graciously bestowed upon us. His hand, so often visible in our preservation, has stayed the pestilence … Our liberties, religious and civil, have been maintained, the fountains of knowledge have all been kept open, and means of happiness widely spread and generally enjoyed greater than have fallen to the lot of any other nation. And while deeply penetrated with gratitude for the past let us hope that His all-wise providence will so guide our counsels as that they shall result in giving satisfaction to our constituents, securing the peace of the country, and adding new strength to the united Government under which we live.” |
